⚽ UEFA Nations League 2026/27 Matchday 1

The 2026/27 UEFA Nations League opened with a bang this week, with Matchday 1 played across Thursday, Friday and Saturday. World champions Spain were the undisputed story of the opening round — but there was plenty more drama across all four leagues. Here is everything that happened.

LEAGUE A

Group A1

Zidane's France opened their Nations League campaign in style, winning 1-0 in Turkey on Friday evening. A nervous but disciplined performance from the Bleus — exactly the kind of result a new manager needs in his first competitive fixture.

The result was immediately overshadowed by a worrying injury to captain Kylian Mbappé.

As Mbappé struck the ball, he appeared to stretch his left leg awkwardly and went down in evident discomfort immediately after scoring. He received treatment on the pitch, briefly returned, but quickly went down again — and Zidane wasted no time, withdrawing him in the 58th minute and sending on Désiré Doué in his place.

Italy, meanwhile, suffered a surprising 2-0 home defeat to Belgium in Rome — a concerning opening for the Azzurri.

Group A2

The Netherlands and Germany played out a 1-1 draw in a heavyweight opener that satisfied neither side. Serbia lost 2-1 to Greece — an early statement from a Greek side that has been quietly building under the radar.

Group A3 — The Match of the Weekend

Spain came from behind to beat England 3-2 in a Wembley thriller on Saturday. Lamine Yamal opened the scoring in just the 2nd minute, before England fought back through Anthony Gordon (36') and Harry Kane (40') to lead 2-1 at half time. Spain then punished a missed Kane penalty to turn the match around, with Álex Baena (60') and Mikel Oyarzabal (74') completing the comeback. The world champions showed exactly why they are the team to beat. England's identity crisis continues.

Croatia also made a winning start, beating Czechia 2-1 on Saturday.

Group A4

Norway beat Denmark 3-2 in an entertaining Scandinavian clash. Portugal opened with a 1-0 win over Wales.
